Goodbye Winter Skin. HELLO Summer Glow!

With quarantine in place, there are days we still feel like we are in the middle of winter. But, school is almost OUT, which means summer is nearly here. Say goodbye to winter skin once and for all.

Did you know that body scrubs are your BFF for getting rid of winter skin? In an article with Prevention, Dendy Engelman, MD, a board certified dermatologist in New York says,“Physical exfoliation can buff away dry skin patches caused by winter air and dramatically change skin texture."

Body scrubs are so great because they can moisturize and exfoliate your skin at the same time! Check out these tips for getting maximum results from your body scrub!

1. Wash with a gentle, sulfate free body wash first.

Body scrubs are not cleansers, which is why you still need to cleanse your skin even if you will be using a body scrub. We recommend cleansing first because once you exfoliate with a body scrub, your skin will be primed for a moisture-rich lotion. Make sure your body wash is sulfate free!  Sulfates are also known as Sodium Laurel Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate or SLS. “SLS can often dry out the skin, and some people find they may lead to itchiness or more acne when their skin is in frequent contact with SLS,” David Lortscher, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist told Teen Vogue. There's no reason for our skin to be any drier than it already is, so say no to sulfates.

2. Now you're ready for a body scrub.

We recommend using your body scrub starting with your neck and working your way down. You can use you a body scrub all over your body - just be sure to skip your face. Your face is extra sensitive so you should only use a facial scrub on your face - not a body scrub.  Rub the scrub over your body in a circular motion. If you need to, give extra attention to really rough parts of your body - like your knees, elbows and heals. When you rinse off the body scrub, you should notice that your skin feels softer. You just sloughed off tons of dry skin cells (yay!). Now your skin is "PREPped" for moisturizer, aka lotion. Caution: Be sure your body scrub is not slippery on your shower or bath tub floor.

3. It's lotion time!

Now that you've sloughed off your dead skin with a body scrub, you'll need to apply lotion as it's most effective when applied right after getting out of the shower or bath. Gently pat dry your skin and then apply your body lotion. This will help lock in the moisture that your skin retained from the shower or bath. According to skincare.com, it's also important to moisturize your skin before bedtime as moisture is pulled out of our skin as we sleep. If you shower in the morning, that's a good time to reapply lotion. This will get your skin rehydrated after a good night's sleep.
